KUALA LUMPUR Singapore and Malaysia have built a strong and enduring partnership by consistently focusing on shared growth, future cooperation and mutual interests across generations of leadership, Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam said during his state visit to Malaysia.
Speaking after meeting Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar at the Istana Negara, President Tharman said the two neighboring countries have maintained close ties despite historical challenges, choosing to strengthen cooperation rather than allow differences to hinder progress.
He highlighted major bilateral initiatives such as the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone and the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, describing them as key projects that will enhance economic integration, improve cross-border connectivity and deepen people-to-people exchanges in tourism, education and healthcare.
President Tharman noted that the relationship between the two nations is built not only on economic cooperation but also on longstanding social and cultural connections. He said this strong foundation enables both countries to navigate global uncertainties while continuing to support each other’s development.
HanoiPost reports that Malaysia’s King Sultan Ibrahim also emphasized the long history of trade and cooperation between the two countries, reaffirming their shared commitment to expanding bilateral ties. During his visit, President Tharman also met Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and encouraged Singaporeans living in Malaysia to continue strengthening the friendship between the neighboring nations through business, education and community engagement.
