BANGKOK A devastating late-night fire at Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao, a popular restaurant and brewery in Bangkok, has claimed 27 lives and left 18 others injured, prompting Thai authorities to launch a full investigation into the cause of the blaze and the venue’s fire safety measures.
The fire erupted around 11:50 p.m. on Sunday in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district. Firefighters brought the flames under control within 35 minutes, but many victims were reportedly trapped inside as thick smoke spread rapidly through the building.
Preliminary findings suggest the restaurant had narrow access points, a low ceiling and possible issues with emergency exits, which may have contributed to the high death toll. Most victims are believed to have died from smoke inhalation, with many found near the rear toilets of the building.
According to witnesses, smoke was first noticed near an electrical panel before a power outage and an explosion were reported. Panic quickly spread as customers rushed to escape through smoke-filled rooms.
HanoiPost reports that Thai authorities are investigating the restaurant’s construction permits, emergency exits, fire safety systems and possible building code violations. Bangkok officials have also established a coordination center to assist victims’ families, while forensic teams continue identifying those who lost their lives and determining the exact cause of the tragedy.
