Vietnam has called for stronger international cooperation and fair governance of natural resources, emphasizing that responsible resource management is essential for promoting peace, security, and sustainable development. Speaking at a United Nations Security Council debate in New York, Minister Counsellor Nguyễn Hải Lưu stressed the importance of integrating natural resource governance into conflict prevention, peacebuilding, and post-conflict recovery strategies.
Highlighting ASEAN’s experience, the Vietnamese diplomat urged the international community to establish transparent global standards while respecting each country’s sovereignty over its natural resources. He also called for measures to prevent the politicization of resource supply chains and encouraged greater technical assistance and technology transfer to help developing nations process and utilize mineral resources more sustainably.
Vietnam reaffirmed its commitment to responsible resource governance and expressed its willingness to work with global partners to ensure natural resources contribute to long-term peace, shared prosperity, and economic growth. During the debate, UN Secretary-General António Guterres also warned that illegal resource exploitation continues to fuel conflict and inequality, urging the international community to strengthen cooperation and ensure local communities receive fair benefits from their natural wealth.
