Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam has attended the opening of the high-level General Debate of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York. The high-level debate began on September 22 local time and will continue through September 28. The meeting brings together leaders from countries around the world to discuss international security, development and cooperation.
To Lam’s participation is an important part of Vietnam’s diplomatic program in the United States. The theme of this year’s General Debate is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” The theme reflects concerns about conflicts, economic changes and the ability of international institutions to respond to global challenges. Vietnam has traditionally emphasized multilateral cooperation and respect for international law while seeking to strengthen its role in international organizations.
To Lam is using the visit to meet other leaders attending the General Assembly. Vietnam has discussed cooperation in areas including agriculture, renewable energy, climate change and trade. One meeting involved Fiji, with discussions focused on agriculture, fisheries, renewable energy and climate adaptation. Climate change is particularly important for Vietnam because large parts of the country are vulnerable to rising sea levels, storms and flooding.
Vietnam has also been seeking stronger international partnerships for economic development. The country has become an important manufacturing center in Asia and has attracted investment from companies operating in electronics, technology and other industries. Economic diplomacy is therefore an important part of To Lam’s US visit, with the Vietnamese leader also meeting American officials and business representatives.
The United States is one of Vietnam’s largest trading partners. Both countries have expanded cooperation in recent years after upgrading their diplomatic relationship. Vietnam wants to increase trade and investment while maintaining stable access to the US market.
