Vietnam’s digital economy is expected to reach 49 billion US dollars in 2026, marking annual growth of 20 percent. A new regional report says the country is on track to record one of Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing digital markets, supported by online shopping, financial services and technology-based businesses.
The forecast comes from the e-Conomy SEA 2026 report, prepared by Google, Temasek and Bain and Company. It estimates that Vietnam and Malaysia will share the region’s highest digital economy growth rate this year.
E-commerce is expected to remain the largest part of Vietnam’s digital economy. The sector could generate around 32 billion dollars in gross merchandise value, representing an increase of 22 percent compared with 2025. It would account for roughly two-thirds of the country’s total digital market.
Online travel is also expected to expand. The sector could reach 5 billion dollars in value, while online media may grow to 7 billion dollars. Ride-hailing and food delivery services are forecast to generate around 6 billion dollars as competition between service providers continues.
Digital financial services are gaining ground as more consumers use online payments and lending platforms. The value of digital payment transactions is expected to reach 197 billion dollars in 2026, up 21 percent from the previous year. Digital lending is projected to grow by 34 percent to 14 billion dollars.
Artificial intelligence is becoming another important part of the country’s digital transformation. The report estimates that Vietnam has around 45 million generative AI users, equal to about 65 percent of its workforce. Many users are applying AI tools to shopping, travel planning and everyday tasks.
AI is also changing how companies communicate with customers. Online retailers are adding AI features to improve product searches, recommend items and automate tasks for sellers. These tools could help businesses reduce operating costs and improve customer service.
The report also found that Vietnamese accounts for a large share of AI conversations in the country. This suggests that local-language technology is becoming more important as AI use expands.
The growth forecast reflects Vietnam’s increasing use of digital services and online business platforms. However, continued expansion will depend on reliable infrastructure, strong data protection and the ability of local companies to compete.
Vietnam’s digital market is becoming an important part of its wider economy. If the forecast is achieved, the country will strengthen its position as one of Southeast Asia’s leading digital growth markets.
