Vietnam’s busiest northern airport has introduced a new immigration system that is already reducing waiting times for arriving passengers. The change comes as international travel demand continues to grow across the country.
The Noi Bai Airport Immigration Lanes program began at the start of August at Terminal 2 of Nội Bài International Airport in Hà Nội. The new arrangement provides separate immigration lines for Vietnamese citizens, helping speed up the entry process and reduce congestion in arrival areas.
Airport officials said the updated system allows immigration officers to process passengers more efficiently. Before the change, travelers holding regular passports often waited in the same queues regardless of nationality. As a result, delays involving one passenger could affect many others standing in line.
Under the new setup, passengers are directed to dedicated immigration lanes based on their travel category. These include lanes for Vietnamese citizens, foreign visitors, flight crews, VIP passengers, transit travelers, and other groups.
According to airport authorities, the impact has been immediate. Average immigration clearance times for Vietnamese citizens have dropped from about 26 to 27 minutes to roughly 16 minutes. In some cases, travelers have completed the entire arrival process in just four to five minutes.
The reduction is especially important during busy travel periods. In the past, passengers sometimes experienced waits ranging from 30 minutes to more than one hour during peak arrival times. The dedicated lanes are helping to create a smoother and more predictable airport experience.
The airport has also expanded the use of technology to improve passenger processing. Vietnamese citizens who hold biometric, chip-enabled passports can use automated e-gates. Airport staff remain available to assist travelers who need support while using the system.
The launch of the Noi Bai Airport Immigration Lanes reflects the rapid growth in passenger traffic at the airport. During the first six months of 2026, Nội Bài International Airport handled more than 111,300 flights. That figure represents an increase of 11 percent compared with the same period last year.
Passenger numbers also continued to rise. The airport processed approximately 18.2 million travelers during the first half of the year, marking a 10 percent increase from the same period in 2025.
Cargo operations have shown strong growth as well. More than 548,000 tonnes of cargo and mail moved through the airport during the six-month period. This represented a year-on-year increase of 21 percent.
The growth at Nội Bài mirrors the broader recovery of Vietnam’s aviation sector. Data from aviation authorities shows that international passenger traffic reached 26.2 million travelers during the first half of 2026. That figure was 15 percent higher than the same period a year earlier.
Domestic travel also remained stable. Passenger traffic on domestic routes reached 18.7 million during the first six months of the year. Although growth was modest at 0.3 percent, the figures demonstrate continued demand for air travel within the country.
Vietnamese airlines currently operate 54 domestic routes and 109 international routes connecting destinations across 22 countries and territories. At the same time, foreign airlines from 41 countries and territories operate 235 scheduled routes serving Vietnam.
Airport officials say further improvements are planned. Nội Bài International Airport intends to continue addressing operational challenges while investing in digital technology and environmentally focused initiatives. These efforts are designed to increase airport capacity and improve the overall passenger experience.
The airport has also set ambitious goals for the future. Management aims to exceed its operational targets for 2026 by more than 10 percent while improving service standards. Officials are working toward achieving a four-star airport rating by meeting internationally recognized quality benchmarks.
As travel demand continues to rise, the Noi Bai Airport Immigration Lanes initiative represents an important step toward faster processing, improved efficiency, and better service for millions of travelers passing through Vietnam’s leading international gateway.
