Vietnam has exported locally manufactured offshore wind equipment to Europe for the first time, with four substations built for Poland’s massive Baltica 2 wind farm now departing the country’s shores. State owned energy group Petrovietnam confirmed today that its subsidiary PTSC Mechanical and Construction, working alongside international partners, had completed and begun transporting the substations, marking a genuine milestone for Vietnamese heavy industrial export capability.
Two of the four substations are already en route to Europe, while the remaining two have been loaded onto barges at PTSC Port and stand ready for departure. Baltica 2, jointly developed by Denmark’s Orsted and Poland’s PGE in the Baltic Sea, represents Poland’s largest ever renewable energy project, with a total planned capacity of approximately one point five gigawatts spread across one hundred seven wind turbines once fully operational.
The contract awarded to PTSC covered the complete scope from design and procurement through construction and commissioning, encompassing four substations along with four module support structures carrying a combined weight of roughly sixteen thousand tonnes. PTSC Mechanical and Construction handled fabrication, final assembly, and onshore commissioning entirely within Vietnam, before the completed structures began their journey toward installation off the Polish coastline.
Petrovietnam emphasized that PTSC had to undergo rigorous capability assessments and satisfy stringent requirements spanning engineering standards, quality control, safety protocols, and delivery schedules in order to participate in this landmark international project. Meeting those exacting European offshore wind industry standards represents a significant validation of Vietnamese heavy industrial manufacturing capability on a genuinely global stage.
Installation and grid connection work off the Polish coast is scheduled to begin in November, once the substations complete their sea journey from Vietnam to the Baltic Sea project site. Once fully operational, Baltica 2 is expected to supply electricity to approximately two point four million Polish households, representing a substantial contribution toward Poland’s broader renewable energy transition and reduced dependence on fossil fuel generation.
This collaboration marks the third successful partnership between Danish firm Semco Maritime and PTSC Mechanical and Construction on offshore substation platform projects, reflecting an established and deepening working relationship between the Vietnamese fabricator and its European project partners. That track record of repeated collaboration suggests Vietnamese manufacturers are increasingly viewed as reliable, capable partners for complex offshore energy infrastructure projects rather than simply lower cost alternatives to European fabrication yards.
The milestone carries broader significance for Vietnam’s industrial development ambitions, demonstrating that the country’s manufacturing base has matured sufficiently to compete for and successfully deliver highly technical renewable energy infrastructure destined for demanding international markets. This achievement builds on Vietnam’s established reputation within oil and gas fabrication, extending that industrial expertise into the rapidly growing global offshore wind sector.
As the four substations continue their journey toward Poland’s Baltic Sea coastline, this export milestone offers a concrete example of how Vietnamese heavy industry is positioning itself within increasingly globalized renewable energy supply chains. For Petrovietnam and its PTSC subsidiary, successfully delivering this complex project may open doors to additional offshore wind contracts across Europe and other markets actively expanding their renewable energy infrastructure in the years ahead.
