Vietnam has secured two important leadership positions in international intellectual property organisations, strengthening its role in global discussions on innovation and trademark protection.
The country has been elected Chair of the Madrid Working Group at the World Intellectual Property Organization for the 2026–2027 term. It has also secured the position of Vice Chair of the APEC Intellectual Property Experts Group for the 2027–2028 term.
The appointments give Vietnamese officials a greater role in discussions about international intellectual property rules and cooperation. They also provide opportunities for the country to take part in shaping the future direction of these organisations.
The Madrid Working Group focuses on the international system for registering trademarks. Its work includes discussions on legal procedures, registration rules and improvements to the system used by businesses seeking protection in different countries.
As Chair, Vietnam’s representative will lead meetings, guide discussions and work with the WIPO Secretariat on agendas and working documents.
The APEC position will also allow Vietnam to support the group’s activities and represent it at relevant meetings when required. The appointment is particularly important as Vietnam prepares to host APEC in 2027.
The two positions reflect Vietnam’s growing participation in international cooperation on intellectual property. They are also expected to help the country build stronger technical expertise and develop closer working relationships with other member economies.
