A free ca trù class at Hà Nội’s Bích Câu Đạo Quán is helping preserve one of Việt Nam’s oldest traditional art forms while introducing it to younger generations and international visitors. Held every Saturday, the programme welcomes learners of all ages, from students and working professionals to foreign tourists, creating a space where participants can practise and experience the unique blend of poetry, music and performance that defines ca trù.
Founded by Meritorious Artists Nguyễn Thị Vân Mai and Trần Koóng, the initiative has grown significantly since its launch in 2008. Beyond weekly classes, the venue also hosts free Saturday evening performances, giving both learners and experienced artists an opportunity to showcase the art. Organisers say community-based teaching and cultural exchange are essential to ensuring the long-term survival of the UNESCO-recognised heritage, which remains in need of continued safeguarding.
Following the recovery of cultural activities after the pandemic, the club has welcomed an increasing number of international visitors eager to learn about Vietnamese traditional arts.
