Researchers in Hải Phòng are using small civilian drones equipped with multispectral cameras to improve the monitoring of coastal ecosystems, offering a faster and more cost-effective alternative to traditional field surveys and satellite imagery. The technology is being tested in the Bàng La mangrove forest in Đồ Sơn and the coral reefs surrounding Bạch Long Vĩ Island, two of the city’s most important natural ecosystems.
Flying at low altitudes, the drones capture high-resolution images that allow scientists to closely monitor changes in mangrove coverage and coral reef health. The advanced imaging system also helps distinguish coral, algae and other seabed features more accurately, making it easier to detect early signs of environmental degradation and support timely conservation efforts.
The research team has developed a complete workflow for data collection, image processing and ecosystem mapping, producing detailed maps at a 1:5,000 scale. The findings and technical processes have already been transferred to the Bạch Long Vĩ Marine Protected Area Management Board to support routine environmental monitoring.
